Strategic Data Science Initiatives: Text Analysis Methodology

Researchers: Office of Institutional Research & Analytics (Kevork Horissian, Mike Latorre, Doug LeBlanc, Rita Liu, Sohini Palit, Wei You, and Jocelyn Zhao) We have developed a rigorous, literature-informed methodology for analyzing open-ended survey responses and other textual data. This approach ensures our insights are accurate and grounded in best practices, enhancing the quality and credibility of our qualitative analysis. See an example of data analyzed as part of the First-Year Transition Survey using this methodology below: Q6. Which of the following reasons best describe why your semester is going well? Birds, Butterflies, and Beyond: The Statistical Challenges and Opportunities of Community Scientists as Data Collectors

Researcher: Sara Stoudt (Assistant Professor of Mathematics) Many ecological questions require hard-won data, but thanks to participation from community members on a variety of nature apps like iNaturalist, eBird, and eButterfly, there is more and more data available for a variety of species, across longer time scales and broader spatial extents. However, this data is collected in a less systematic way, so there are limitations for its use for statistical modeling. Sara Stoudt, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, works with ecologists to find creative ways to make this data usable for scientific research. Along the way, they learn about both the […]

Code a Valentine Event

By Keeler Thomas ’25 Anticipating Valentine’s Day, and in honor of International Love Data Week, the Dominguez Center for Data Science hosted its first Code a Valentine guided event. Did you know you can create unique geometries using simple computer programming? In one short evening, participants used the data visualization and statistical package R, with provided templates from the Center, to learn the basics of drawing hearts, trees, and other complex shapes. They were then able to individualize and customize their drawings and messages to decorate and print personal digital Valentine’s Day cards. The event, which was open to the […]

Data Analysis of the NFL Top 100 Rankings

Researchers: pictured above, left to rightMax Wilson ‘27 (Business Analytics), Joe Wilck (Associate Professor of Practice in Analytics & Operations Management), Sam Gutekunst (John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Assistant Professor of Data Science) Max Wilson ‘27 spent the summer of 2024 studying the NFL Top 100, a ranking of NFL players according to the NFL players themselves.  Max wanted to study what the players most value when ranking each other, as well as how this ranking system compares to other systems that rank NFL players (e.g. those based on statistics).  Max also studied the “legacy effect” and the extent […]
