Fighting for Freedom: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee Freedom Seekers, and the Combahee River Raid

Dr. Edda Fields Black recently won the Pulitzer for her book Combee. She is a historian of Africa andteaches history at Carnegie Mellon University. Her talk on Wednesday, February 4 at 4:30 pm, entitled Fighting for Freedom: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee Freedom Seekers, and theCombahee River Raid, utilizes data from veterans’ records, land deeds, and much more to narrate thework of Harriet Tubman assisting freedom seekers during the Civil War. Fields-Black will address Tubman in relation to our 2026 Spring Series theme, Youth from Africa and the Diasporas: Knowers,Innovators, Visionaries, and Everyday People. Coming of age in a world where pandemics and digitaltechnologies are transforming the way we live our lives, poses unique challenges. This theme allows usto engage in an extended conversation about the futures youth aspire to and deserve to realize, despitethe quantitative and qualitative obstacles they face at this moment.
